Universidad Andrés Bello Earns Five Stars in QS Stars 2025 Rating

The QS Stars rating evaluates the performance of institutions that voluntarily undergo this rigorous assessment. Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB) was evaluated across nine categories and earned an overall score that places it at the level of excellence—making it one of only five institutions in South America to receive this distinction, and the only one in Chile.

UNAB is the only Chilean university—and one of just five in South America—to attain the QS Stars excellence level. This globally recognized rating system evaluates university performance through more than 70 indicators spanning various areas of institutional management.

Unlike traditional rankings that compare institutions against each other, QS Stars provides an in-depth, individualized evaluation. It assigns a rating in the form of stars (ranging from 0 to 5+) based on institutional performance in key areas of higher education.

Five-Star Excellence

The highest rating—five stars—is awarded to institutions scoring more than 700 points in the assessment. Universidad Andrés Bello earned 754 out of a possible 1,000 points across nine categories.

The QS Stars university rating system uses a comprehensive and robust framework to assess institutional performance. It serves as an internationally recognized quality benchmark and provides valuable insights into areas of strength and opportunities for improvement, helping drive higher standards in higher education.

“What makes this rating valuable is that it is not a ranking—it does not aim to compare one university with another—but rather evaluates an institution’s own performance across key areas of university management,” said UNAB Provost Ana María Pavez.

“These are international standards that matter deeply to us, especially as we have made internationalization a strategic priority. Internationalization is not only about mobility and exchange programs—it is also about aligning with quality benchmarks. This is a thorough evaluation that allows for valuable and actionable feedback from an external source, which is critical to our continuous improvement processes,” added Provost Pavez.

UNAB’s focus on quality management aligned with international standards has been in progress for years. It was the second university in Chile to earn institutional accreditation based on U.S. standards through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Additionally, the university has undergone a broad and inclusive quality assurance process for all its faculties, certified by the Spanish agency ANECA. This has embedded Europe-wide quality standards alongside existing international accreditations for many of its academic programs.

Excellence in Six Key Areas

In this edition of QS Stars, more than 1,500 institutions worldwide were evaluated. UNAB earned five stars both institutionally and in six of the nine categories assessed: Teaching, Online Learning, Employability, Governance, Environmental Impact, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

“We are a university committed to excellence, inclusivity, and secular values. These principles are core to our mission, which is why we constantly seek to self-evaluate and set high standards in the areas that define us,” said Pavez.

“Achieving the highest rating in areas such as Teaching, Employability, Online Education, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion fills us with pride and motivates us to continue setting ambitious goals that fulfill our mission for the entire university community,” she added.

The evaluation process—which began in August 2024—required UNAB to submit data and information for more than 60 indicators, including external surveys on student and alumni satisfaction.

Evaluation Details

In Teaching, for example, the evaluation included variables such as postgraduate offerings, student-to-faculty ratios, student satisfaction, instructional hours per faculty member, learning management systems, and student retention.

In Employability, indicators included employer reputation, alumni career support services, and graduate employment outcomes.

UNAB received five stars in several categories, including Environmental Impact, Governance, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. In these areas, the evaluation considered a wide range of factors, such as institutional accreditation, sustainability and ethics policies, diversity scholarships, gender balance, accessibility, environmental research, climate action plans, and energy consumption.

Harvard University (USA) leads the QS Stars rating globally, followed by the University of Oxford (UK), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA), the University of Cambridge (UK), and Stanford University (USA).
