Scimago Research Methodology
Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is a classification of academic and research-related institutions, which allows comparing their contribution to the generation of knowledge. These are ranked using a composite indicator that combines three different sets of indicators, based on research performance, innovation results, and social impact as measured by their visibility on the web.
The first of these is measured in terms of the volume, impact, and quality of the institution’s research output, including openness (open access), scientific leadership, international collaboration, and high-quality publications, among others. This information is provided by data from Scopus, the database of bibliographic references and scientific citations.
The innovation ranking is calculated based on the number of patent applications, the generation of innovative knowledge, and the impact of the institution on the industry.
Finally, social impact metrics consider visibility on social networks together with more specific parameters, such as sustainable development objectives, the participation of women in research processes, and the impact on public policies.
