Unab is Among Only 4 Chilean Universities Included in the 2024 Shanghai Ranking

Universidad Andrés Bello consolidated its position among the top 1,000 universities in the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2024. It is also the only non-traditional Chilean private university in this prestigious ranking.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, is widely recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious measures of research quality. Its reputation is based on both its comprehensive scope and the reliability of the criteria used to measure quality and scientific output.

In 2024, Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB) once again ranked among Chile’s four best higher education institutions and among the top one thousand in the world.

At the national level, the Universidad de Chile leads the ranking, followed by the Pontificia Universidad Católica, the Universidad de Concepción, and Universidad Andrés Bello, the only non-traditional private institution on the list.

The President of Universidad Andrés Bello, Julio Castro, celebrated the news, noting, «This recognition in the Shanghai Ranking reaffirms UNAB’s commitment to academic excellence and high-impact research. Our presence among the top four universities in Chile and the top one thousand in the world is a source of pride and a reflection of the quality of our academic and scientific community, which works tirelessly to contribute new knowledge and relevant solutions for our society».

As in the previous year, the Shanghai 2024 Ranking is led worldwide by three U.S. universities: Harvard University is in first place, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

«Being the only non-traditional private university in this prestigious ranking reflects the quality and impact of the research we do at UNAB,» said UNAB’s Dean of Research and Doctoral Studies, Carolina Torrealba, adding:

«This recognition also underscores the fact that UNAB is a relatively young university—35 years old—and that we have established ourselves as an institution that contributes significantly to Chile’s scientific and academic development.

Shanghai Ranking Methodology

The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy is in charge of this measurement. To do so, it evaluates more than 2,500 universities worldwide, selecting the top 1,000 according to four criteria.

Two have the highest weighting, at 40%. «Quality of the Academic Body» measures the presence of Nobel Prize or medal-winning professors and highly cited researchers; «Scientific Productivity» measures the number of publications in the journals Nature and Science and the number of publications indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, both from the Web of Science.

The other two criteria considered are «Quality of Education» and «Academic Performance Per Capita,» weighted 10% each.
