Scimago Ranking Methodology

The Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is an international classification that evaluates universities and research-focused institutions using a composite indicator that includes three main dimensions: research performance (50%), innovation output (30%), and social impact (20%).

The research dimension considers both the volume and quality of scientific output indexed in Scopus, including metrics such as normalized citation impact, scientific excellence (publications among the top 10% most cited), publication leadership, international collaboration, and open access, among others.

In innovation, the ranking measures institutions’ capacity for knowledge transfer and applied research, using patent data (PATSTAT), their impact, and the relationship between scientific output and industry.

The social impact dimension evaluates institutional visibility and digital presence, including web performance (based on Similarweb data), as well as metrics related to contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), women’s participation in research, and influence on public policy.

The ranking provides a comprehensive view of institutional performance, not only in scientific output, but also in the ability to generate innovative knowledge and contribute to social development.
